Destination Linux Update

        Hey there Linux fans,

This is Rocco with a little update on Destination Linux. Some of you may have noticed that the rss feed has not updated in a few weeks. Well, I will try to make this short but let's start at the beginning.

When we started Destination Linux, I had read many websites that gave options on how to properly set up a podcast, but to me there were so many suggestions and ways you could do it but really no clear cut best way to do it. With the myriad of options and also just starting out, Rob and I had no idea how long we were going to do this. So we jumped in and just started out with what was the easiest way which was uploading to soundcloud.

Soundcloud was great at first but we quickly outgrew soundcloud’s free upload storage and bandwidth restrictions which we almost immediately had to start paying for each month and if we were going to pay them, we figured we should probably explore other options and look for a place that specializes in podcasts. We ended up choosing Podomatic which was great at first as well but again ran into a similar situation and and the price to upload was getting higher and higher because of the need for more for bandwidth and upload storage. I searched around to see how other podcasts were creating their content which led me to talk to a few people about our situation. I ended up having a long talk with Joe Ressington of the Late Night Linux podcast where we discussed the countless options available which I really appreciated because I believe it was 3am or 4am where he was. After a few options were laid out, I talked to Rob and we decided to go with something I have wanted from the beginning which is a proper website.

That was the long explanation to announce that we now have a website which is www.destinationlinux.org where you can go to find all the info you will need on Destination Linux, including contacting us, email, social media links, downloading the mp3, listening to the mp3 or actually watching the vidcast portion of the show via youtube and the the most important point which is why I am recording this is to Subscribe to the RSS Feed.

When we switched over to uploading to the website the actual rss feed changed as well. I made sure to change it in the most obvious places like itunes, google play and others and I thought I was successful because the feed in my pocketcast updated automatically and I verified that with others including people in the telegram group as well. With that said, I have been seeing quite a few comments come in stating that the rss feed has not updated in a few weeks on some players and the last episode was Episode 14. So I am here to ask you that if your destination linux podcast feed has not updated in the last few weeks and you are still on episode 14, please unsubscribe from that feed and search for Destination Linux in your podcast player again. Usually it will show a preview of episodes and If it shows Episode 18 than you are safe to subscribe to that feed. If you can only find the podomatic feed that is updated to episode 14 then just go to our website at www.destinationlinux.org and click on the rss feed link there which is (http://destinationlinux.org/feed/mp3/)

I’m sorry I went on so long but I figured you guys needed a proper explanation for what happened.

Rob, I've been thinking about this for the past few weeks.

What are your thoughts on whether or not the Linux distros should seriously begin thinking about making the desktop UIs more touch friendly? I ask this because as you know, more and more ultrabooks and even some of the desktop all-in-one PCs have touch screens nowadays.

By and large the Linux desktop user interfaces are still primarily mouse and keyboard focused. Perhaps the Unity desktop comes the closest to being more touch friendly, but then there's the question of the applications that are written for Linux as well. Not that I'm suggesting that mouse and keyboard go away, but just provide touch capabilities as well. The OS could add support for touchpad gestures, etc.

Just wondering what your thoughts are? May be a good discussion for you and Rocco on Destination Linux. I know you have the Solus guy on there a week or so ago. Perhaps he has some thoughts on this.

Heyo! After watching the last podcast, I really took a step back to look at the very core concepts of Linux. Even after using nothing but Linux for over a year and a half, I really find it fascinating and wonderful to have a plethora of operating systems to use that are stable and simple, yet at the heart of every distro, they've given you a fork and knife to dig into the meat of the system to truly experience freedom. A big thanks to the two of you for these podcasts and the time you spend with the community. Rocco, we're gonna have to safeguard your hard drives! Best of luck getting that situated.

* Regarding the AUR -- even though dodgy software is unlikely -- isn't there always a trust issue.
Cheers guys.

In a recent podcast, while discussing Android users - ye have mentioned Google Play Store -- please also mention F-Droid. F-Droid is a software repo, similar to the Google Play store. It contains only apps which are free software.

The Revenge Installer is a program made by our friend Jody James, which is a Graphical Installer for Arch Linux to make installing vanilla arch an easy task. It walks you through the steps by asking you questions and before you know it, you will have a brand new plain vanilla arch with the desktop of your choice.
Thank you Jody, for all of the hard work you put into it.

Viewer Question LAZ X (Follow Up)
I was wondering if there is a way to normalize the master audio output in Linux. I love Linux but don't like playing movies or music because the audio out is not normalized and I have manually adjust the volume levels constantly. In Windows I use K Lite codec pack which has a plugin option to normalize the main audio out, but I can't seem to find a way to do this in Linux. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

We Have an Answer!
(gzenum2) - Viewer to Destination Linux
Hey guys, great show, loving it !
Had the same problem with normalizing sound and this is how I solve it, it's pretty easy, in your distribution find and install LADSPA plugins, then just edit /etc/pulse/default.pa and add this two lines at the end :
load-module module-ladspa-sink sink_name=compressor plugin=sc4_1882 label=sc4 control=1,1.5,401,-10,20,5,12
set-default-sink compressor
Reboot and it's all good ;)

I was wondering if there is a way to normalize the master audio output in Linux. I love Linux but don't like playing movies or music because the audio out is not normalized and I have manually adjust the volume levels constantly. In Windows I use K Lite codec pack which has a plugin option to normalize the main audio out, but I can't seem to find a way to do this in Linux. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys, great show, loving it !
Had the same problem with normalizing sound and this is how I solve it, it's pretty easy, in your distribution find and install LADSPA plugins, then just edit /etc/pulse/default.pa and add this two lines at the end :
load-module module-ladspa-sink sink_name=compressor plugin=sc4_1882 label=sc4 control=1,1.5,401,-10,20,5,12
set-default-sink compressor
Reboot and it's all good ;)

From RK:
I have successfully installed Ubuntu Mate 16.04 LTS on my Mac Mini as a dual boot system. I also got rEfind installed manually on my Mac. The thing is that rEfind can't seam to boot Ubuntu. I did figure out how to boot into it from a recovery boot in Advanced Systems. I have it all setup, and it is working well, except for that. Do you have any sage advice that could help me solve that boot up problem?

RK Fixed:
I can't believe it, but I solved the problem myself. I was searching the Internet, and I saw the word "nomodeset". I used that command to launch the live disk. I thought,,, "Of course". I found a web page that told me how to edit my grub file to make it permanent, and ... It worked!!! Hooray!

I get that you use Antergos a lot from your videos. Antergos installer (cnchi) has a hidden mode also which lets you chose some other unlisted desktop environment which is not generally available. Its for developer, but heck most of the rolling releases are, that never stopped us from trying them right. To use it quit the installer, open terminal and type "sudo cnchi -dvz" . Contact me if you enjoy it.
